Great article Nick. I once sang for several years with a group where the stretch van was paid for, the PA set paid for and records paid for. We had no worry except to minister and entertain the crown. Sometime it would have been great to have a bus but foolish spending. Speaking of the audience, it seems the promoter advises the pro groups what the audience wants and the group manager/owner ignores it and ways he knows best. WRONG. Groups better start paying the promoter who has been doing it sucessfully for over 25 years attention. He knows his audience better than the group. And leave the expensive bands at home.

Wow, I am an SG artist, and "All in All" was easily my favorite track on the cd. I just loved it. And I really don't like much contemporary music. Ironically, another one of the best songs on the cd was "He's Alive."

Funny how your 2 least favorites can be someone else's 2 favorites.

Great writing Bill as usual. No matter who you credit, you give the Lord his due. You are never afraid to give God the glory. It was great to sit down with you recently and talk over old times. Wish you could have been at the Grand Ole Gospel reunion this year. It was great. Hope to see you soon. We will keep you and Dorcas is our prayers.

    Nick,

This article is spot on. Too often those in your position are more concerned with making people feel good rather then helping them to become better artist. As Christian artists, we are called to be excellent in all that we undertake. Thank you for your example and friendship.

  18.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Gaither Vocal Band - Greatly Blessed ~ 09/03/2010

I figured the review of this album would take some hits. As I posted on the blog when the album was released. People are jumping all over it for one reason or another. Some say it's not SG enough. Well as I have said before GVB isn't pure SG. The harmonies on this album is by far the best they've EVER been.

As far as the review against David. I would said many don't care for him. For some reason, people take his vocals as over produced and breathy or overdone.
Let me go on record and say that David Phelps is without a doubt the finest voaclist in gospel music period.

And sorry Jimmy, I dont agree with your comment about the review is what many think including those that sing. I sing and I don't totally agree with this review. I understand it's all a matter of opinion and prefrence but I would tend to think a lot of people don't get it because they either haven't been trained vocally or they sing SG and can't think outside that little box.

To do what he does vocally is not easy...and I'm not talking about just singing high. He has the total package.

As a vocal performance in college I can tell you he is the real deal! His talent is remarkable and many in the SG field have never welcomed him with open arms for various reasons.

  19.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Gaither Vocal Band - Greatly Blessed ~ 09/02/2010

You know Amy talk bout her brought back to 2nd grade...what about you? I'm not one to sit here and bash cuz were all God's children so i try to get along but you just used that much comment space to comment on the CD review and all you did was bash on Janet and didn't say one thing bout the CD or the review. Sad...and as for the review it does seem like hes directing all the errors of the CD towards David Phelps. You may not like his stykle but come on he makes Clean sound fresh and something new. And All in All is beautifully sung orchestrated and written. Don't take someone like David Phelps for granted. He's an awesome singer and were lucky to have him not only sing in our genre but to COME BACK to it. Appreciate. smile

  20.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Gaither Vocal Band - Greatly Blessed ~ 09/02/2010

David's vocals on that song are indeed a bit overly breathy, I agree. Some of the songs are a tad over produced or at least come across that way.

This is an excellent review that reflects the sentiments of many listeners......especially those who sing.

Overall, this is an outstanding project. My personal favorite since Southern Classics. This is the sound and style of GVB music that many of us were used to in the days of Michael English era of the group. It's good to see a return to the mix between some adult contemporary styles to Southern Gospel.

  21.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Gaither Vocal Band - Greatly Blessed ~ 09/02/2010

Weird...I didn't see where Mr. Unthank noted anywhere on the review that he wasn't blessed by the CD. Interesting how Ms. Burrus automatically assumes that he was NOT blessed (or really even jealous for that matter) because he felt the vocals were "forced, overly breathy, or overdone".

There is such a thing as a difference of opinion. And that, Ms. Burrus would've been so much friendlier of you to say rather than your assumptions of jealousy or lack of blessings.

I wonder why people take so much offense to these reviews when they are nothing really but an opinion of one person. It's a little comical to me really. Someone having a differing opinion almost always pulls us back to the 2nd grade. Sad...

"forced vocals...?" "overly breathy singing...?" "overdone...?"

Methinks, Mr. Unthank, that you are jealous. Either that, or you're clearly not listening to the same cd that the rest of us are so greatly blessed by.

Oh, and...you get "passed" on the highway. The word you want is "past." You're welcome.

    Response to Les Nixon-

Les, you just cannot know how much we loved singing to your wonderful countrymen and seeing the spectacular land you call home. The Aussies were indeed warmly receptive and genuinely hospitable. And the fellowship with you, Martha and your children was superb. We have nothing but the very best memories of our time joined in ministry with you in Australia. From time to time we still hear glowing reports of how you're still spreading the Word. If you EVER get to the USA don't hesitate to let us know and we'll do everything within our grasp to return your kindness and fellowship. Love in Christ.

P.S.- Thanks John for letting les and me reconnect through your forum.

I often wonder if Couriers' sponsors in any of the other 80 lands you visited, enjoy the kudos I gained having them minister here. Thirty years after the tours, you know, Australian Christians still think, regardless of my vigorous protests, that I created you; moulded you into a great group, taught you how to sing so good, and let you go to America to get famous like you did. It's a warm cosy feeling, and I'll hold on to it as long as I can. God bless you again and again .... Les Nixon, Sydney, Australia

Ben Swett was my best friend. When they asked me to join what was known as THE SOUTHERN QUARTET of Soul's Harbor television back in Minneapolis in the 50's, I had never heard of Southern Quartet music as a Northerner, but loved the black quartets I picked up on radio often driving from a date late at night up North. Ben introduced me to the Statesmen, and other groups, after he decided to travel solo and become a missionary in Jamaica. What a delight that man was, such a good friend. He and I recorded together and often sung together after we moved from Minnesota. I miss him, who was old enough to be my dad, as he was a quality guy with a voice very much like his nephew, BIG CHIEF who was six years younger than Ben, and was raised by Ben's mother in Tifton, Georgia, so they were more like brothers than uncle and nephew. The last year we were together, we hired a tenor from Memphis, and would learn that he went to high school with Elvis Presley, and in fact sang in a quartet with him back in their teens, along with Cecile Blackwood. He and I flagged down Elvin Limo after the King gave a concert at the old Minneapolis Auditorium, and we had to perform at Calvery Temple, Soul's Harbor at the same time. Later talking in front of Ben's house on the main drag going South of downtown Mpls., Jerry saw the Cadillac car with Tennessee license and we chased them down, and Jerry shouted over to them and identified himself, so the car stopped. I was too bashful to join him in the limo to meet Elvis, having never heard of him prior to that night. We traveled a lot with the then pastor, REV. GORDON K. PETERSON, and enjoyed each other a lot. Our baritone was Jack Haag who later went to the Cathedral of Tomorrow in Ohio, along with his wife, Nathalie, working there with the Cathedrals and others. Dale Lundgren

I love Gordon's music. I have an old 8-track of the Gallery and listen to it still over and over. I believe the time is really ripe for this song since it seems to me we are closer than ever to the return of Christ. I would like to encourage you to YouTube this song and get it out there so more people can hear the message. Truly our Redemption Draweth Nigh! God bless.

Just heard the news, and I wanted Tracy to know that the Mellon Family Gospel singers are praying for him as he walks through this valley he is in. I know God has a reason, because thats the way my God is, and sometimes he allows things to happen just to show his power and his glory at the end. I am 40 years old and I have diabetes and two heart stints, and I am still out there lifting my voice in his honor, singing louder than ever, and I know Tracy will also. The Perry's are such a blessing to us and have influenced our group in a way that they may never even know. I send our love an prayers for them.

I'm glad you brought up that point, John, because indeed when I was in school and briefly studied the history of the religion they were called Moslems. And they were also referred to as Mohammedans. It seems like we're now being forced to learn more about them. But I'll ever embrace the claims of the real holy book, the Bible, and the glorious things in store for those who accept the only true and living God and His Son, Jesus. Life is good!

  63.    Robert Jones on: We Need A Little “Show Biz”? ~ 08/07/2010

This kind of discussion is very good because it get all of us to think about what we are doing. However, the comments got off the subject. Unfortunately, Nick and I go back to the days of the Statesmen, Blackwood Bros, etc. and most of you are too young to have experienced that era. Today we have hundreds, maybe thousands of "groups" that are out there trying to find dates. Very few these groups of today could have even gotten booked back then. I know this will sound very radical but there is not a group today that could have followed the Statesmen or Blackwood Bros.on stage. They electrified the audience without Karaoke tracks, only a piano and no stacked vocals. There performance was polished, there humor was clean and tasteful and their delivery was "show biz" at its finest. If we want to attract a wider audience today we have to get rid of the "tricks" and "tracks" and polish our performances so they are electrifing.

    Hi Larry,
I wrote to you last year and ordered some of your music tapes. I was wondering if you have some new ones out that I can order?
Also I wanted to ask a question as far as genealogy. I wish Ken was still alive as I am sure he would have done this. We need someone from our direct Biggs family to do a DNA for us. It has to be a direct male descendant of Joseph Biggs. The male carries what we call the Y chromozone which matches exactly to that of his father. The ladies do not have this in their DNA. There appear to be several sets of Biggs in N.C. and Tennessee, no relation. We need to know which line ours comes from. We think it would be the First Biggs that came into Virginia from what little bit we have. But a DNA is the only thing that will make a connection for us. We would like to know if you or some of your family would be willing to do this? I would help pay for it. The cost is about 125.00 and only takes a few minutes to do. The company I would contact will send a kit with some swabs in it and all you do is swabbed the inside of the mouth, put it in the envelope provided and mail back to them. Probably 15 minutes at the most. My Mourning Biggs b. 1792 Her children would be Martin's so they cannot do the Biggs DNA. You are the only one I could think of that might consider doing something like this for us.
Thanks for considering this and Please let me know the names of your new albums. My grandaughter has the tape I ordered and plays it. She is on a mission for her church and enjoys that tape so much.
    Sincerely,

What a great piece of gospel music history. I first learned of the Goss Brothers from a fellow member of our college quartet, the Ambassadors, when
we sang in the quartet together from l966-1970. As a student at a small Bible college, John Wesley College, in Greensboro, NC, I had to pinch every penny.
But once I heard those guys on Bob Poole's TV program, I couldn't wait to get
my first Goss Brothers LP. And eventually every one I could get my hands on.

I wore the grooves out on "How Green Is Your Valley". The haunting lyrics
"how hard do you labor.....does your light shine so bright to reach souls
apart" still motivate my feeble attempts as an 'ambassador' here over 40
years later. Their biological, molecular harmony preceded the Gatlin Brothers,
the Booth Brothers and others....and remain unmatched in modern gospel.

They have to be vertically integrated into the history of Christian gospel
music as not only precursors to future gospel music paradigms, but also
antecedents to early contemporary Christian music. If there is a 'bridge'
twixt the two, these fellow must be that bridge.

Their influence on my life, music, career, thinking, was clearly axiomatic
for this young believer at mid-century. It was certainly providential
provision. I recently purchased the CD available at larigoss.com and look
forward to enjoying these songs technologically reconfigured in cd format.

I hope to meet Lari and Roni one of these days.

I believe the name of the play that the Stamps, Rambos and the Oaks did was "The Three Nails." I saw it in Harrisburg at a Couriers program at the Pennsylvania Farm Show arena. The play was good in presenting the Gospel, but I had to laugh. Every one in the play had a southern accent (maybe they were all from southern Isreal), which was very noticeable up north in Harrisburg,

  75.    AGM on: Terry Blackwood Signs With Jubilee Music Artists ~ 08/04/2010

AGM's avatar You are correct, Terry was not an original member of the Imperials, he was a member of the original Imperials, just as the press release stated.

  76.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Terry Blackwood Signs With Jubilee Music Artists ~ 08/04/2010

I am not trying to foment an argument. I am insisting on accuracy if your going to make a published statement about a group with the history of the Imperials. When one uses the term "Original" they should mean Original. I was there when the Original Imperials were formed. Were you? Many Gospel music fans were not even born when Jake Hess formed the Original Imperials. I was there long before that when Gary filled in for Jake with the Statesmen and sang with the Oak Ridge Quartet before they called themselves "Boys". I was there when Armond sang with the Weatherfords and Henry played the piano for them as well. I honestly think you are trying to cover for your inaccurate write-up with your expansion of the definition of the word "Original". The Imperials, as originally formed were very different in style and sound from the Imperials of Terry's time. Either Terry was a member of the Original Imperials or he was not. It does a dis-service to Gary, Henry, Sherrill(Shaun) and Armond who are the survivors of the Original Imperials to inaccurately imply who was with the Original Imperials. I am a great admirer of Terry Blackwood and the Blackwood Family. I am not an admirer of inaccurate Bios. I know my intent here and it isn't about an argument. There is no argument. Terry was not an "Original" member of the Imperials. That is all that needs to be understood.

  77.    AGM on: Terry Blackwood Signs With Jubilee Music Artists ~ 08/04/2010

AGM's avatar I think you are intentionally trying to cause an arguement. Terry was a member of the original Imperials group. It did not say he originated the group. But, he was a member of the original group as opposed to a later group of men trying to also use the name the Imperials.

  78.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Terry Blackwood Signs With Jubilee Music Artists ~ 08/04/2010

Your statement of reply using the term "original Imperials" is confusing when you say "differentiate between the group that originated the name" and those that came later. Terry was not a member of the Imperials when they "Originated the name" but he was with the Imperials in their "Heyday" and their finest years. I further think that Terry Blackwood has perhaps the finest Lead Singer voice in all of gospel music. He is truly a legitimate Gospel Singer in every since of the word. His last name doesn't hurt either!!

  80.    AGM on: Terry Blackwood Signs With Jubilee Music Artists ~ 08/04/2010

AGM's avatar Mr. Murray is correct. However, I believe the press release is using "the original Imperials" to differentiate between the group that originated the name and those members who consequently joined the group as opposed to the incarnations that have popped up in the last few years all trying to assume the name of The Imperials.

  81.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Terry Blackwood Signs With Jubilee Music Artists ~ 08/04/2010

The Press Release is incorrect. Terry Blackwood would be the first one to tell you that he was NOT one of the original Imperials. Mr.Murray is correct. Jake Hess formed the Imperials in December of 1963,long BEFORE Terry sang with them . Jake was the founder and Lead singer. The other original Imperials were Sherrill Nielsen-Tenor, Gary McSpadden-Baritone, Armond Morales-Bass and Henry Slaughter was the Pianist. They were fantastic! When Jake left the Imperials, Gary and Henry left also. Jim Murray and Armond Morales were already with the Imperials at the time Jake left. Terry came into the Imperial organization after Jake left with health problems and when they became much more contemporary in style along with Jim Murray-Tenor, Roger Wyles-Baritone, Armond Morales-Bass and Joe Moscheo on Piano.

Just like in life, as long as a Christian does not compromise core Christian priciples and values, things like this are fine.

Where it becomes a problem is If it becomes a temptation to do things outside those core principles and beliefs and acting on those temptations, then it is not reaching someone who is not a Christian. That person just becomes like the world and can not set an example of Christ. "We are in this world but we are not to become like this world."

Christians singing to Christians (encouragement) is to be commended just as much as reaching out to those who are not Christians. Christian artists can not bring one lost person to a concert unless that person comes with them to an event. It is up to God and the Church to bring in the lost to hear the gospel. It is up to the artist to bring quality music that sends a clear message, just like pastors have to preach a clear and consice message. Are we to beat someone over the head with a bible. NO. Just a clear message and the Holy Spirit does the rest.

I want to be a music journalist and I'm just trying to get some experience now by writing on this blog. If you have any suggestions on how I could make this better, please tell me. I enjoy your criticism!!!(:

This pop punk quartet from Baltimore, Maryland certainly do not dissapoint on this acoustic set, recorded at the MTV studios. The live concert, which can be purchased as a DVD/CD pack at your local record store was released shortly after the band put out their third studio album, Nothing Personal. Their performance is compromised of six songs and on the DVD, you can see that these guys leave their audience absolutely mesmorized. Though they start off their set with the ever catchy Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t) which proves to pump the crowd up as they put emphasis on the Go! part of the chorus. These boys travel back to their roots as they bring us the lovely melodies which accompany Their So Wrong It’s Right tracks, like, Coffee Shop Soundtrack (which depicts an affair that vocalist Gaskarth had with a married woman) and Remembering Sunday (which gives us a surprise as Kate Voegele performs Juliet Simm’s part beautifully). Also off this album, proven to quite the crowd favourite is Jasey Rae. I have to admit, that this track just may sound better when performed acoustic. The passion that is expressed during this song may be the exact reason why. Following Jasey is Weightless, the turn around point in the Nothing Personal album which lifted Gaskarth out of writer’s block and is considered probably the most sucessful track on the album. What would a All Time Low performance be without a little Dear Maria? To wrap up thier performance, the band close with a classic (as far as the underground alt-rock scene is concerned) Dear Maria Count Me In. Their is hope in the final words that say “There’s a story at the bottom of this bottle, something that is coincidentally proved in practically all All Time Low songs. Fact is, All Time Low always has a story to tell, whether it be about strippers, married woman, breaking out, or simply falling in over your head for love. This is a characteristic that helps them shine and rise above the numerous groups that so enviously strive to emulate them. There is no doubt in my mind that the future holds great promises for All Time Low.

Chester, thanks for your comment. I do not know Alfred Baize from Midland. Sorry I could not help you with this. Congratulations on your singing with the MelodyMasters quartet. There are a lot of really good singers in Texas. I lived in Ft. Worth for a while, and discovered that there were a lot of great singers in the state of Texas. I imagine you are among that group. May God richly bless you.

Country and gospel music have been entwined for decades. And to suggest that a gospel artist must be separated from country or other music to be "true" is something I can't agree with at all. Christians singing to Christians doesn't help anyone else.

You should do a search and listen to Josh Turner tell his testimony as to why he's doing country music. It airs on CMT or GAC sometimes. It's during an acoustic set. It really chokes him up.

To me it's not much different than a Christian not working at a Christian school as a teacher but as a teacher at a public school. It presents more witnessing opportunities.

  98.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on: Sonya Isaacs On Tonight's Jimmy Fallon Show - Backup for Dierks Bentley ~ 07/29/2010

I love the Isaacs. I really do. I probably have 10 of their CD's - including their current "Naturally" almost acapella one.

But I always wonder why many Christian/Gospel singers mingle with the modern Country singers so much. What is the attraction - money or fame? I know they are all "artists" and "performers" trying to make good music to entertain. It seems that stories like this somehow validates what Christians believe/what we are doing because one of our own has made the mainstream of society.

I know that Sonya is married to a country guy now. I'm sure he is a Christian and a great guy. I hope Sony and other Christian musicians use their God-given talent for his glory.

I also know that Nashville is one big musical family of some country, Christian, and other talents. I just don't know if all this is pleasing to the Lord.

In the young career of Monument Quartet they have had the opportunity to perform at the West Virginia State Fair, the Winkler Harvest Festival in Winkler Manitoba Canada. They have performed at Silver Dollar City in Branson MO and Dollywood in Pidgin Forge TN. Monument's 2008 schedule boasts more than 70 fairs and Festivals including the New Jersey State Fair, Delaware State Fair, West Tennessee State Fair, West Missouri State Fair and returning to the West Virginia State Fair, the Punxsutawney Ground Hog Festival in PA and the National Peanut Festival in AL. With more than 40 dates already on hold for 2009 it is clear that these guys have already stolen the hearts of people all across the U.S. and are destined to become America's premier country quartet and variety entertainers.
